I put turtles I found into a pond, did I drown them?

I found two on the road so I caught them and put them in our pond.  Other than saving them, did I end up drowning them?  Was I mistaken to think that all can swim?

    Depending on what they were….

    The best thing to do, rather than assuming a rescued road turtle needs to go into the water or be moved very far at all, is to simply put it a safe distance off the road in the direction it was traveling. Moving them any amount of distance can set off their homing instincts, causing them to go off in search of "home" and increase their likelihood of being struck by a car. If there’s water off to the side of the road that the turtle is going to, simply set it along the edge of the water and let it decide where to go.

    A breed or picture would help… is a tortoise or turtle… theres a diff

    Most turtles can swim, but not all. Most box turtles love to soak, but will sink if put in deep water. The same thing with tortoises.

    Well if they were turtles then yes you did right but if they were tortoise’s yes you probably drowned them!

    The most often seen along roadsides are boxies, and sometimes muds, neither of which swim too well, and certainly boxies don’t! The best thing you can do if you see a turtle moving across the road, is just help it to the other side, *by* water if you want, but they will be nesting females so won’t want to be in the water anyway. Also, box turtles are homing, so if you move them too far away from where they were, they’ll just walk back anyway!

    as long as they had an easy way out of the water and weren’t tortoises then they were probably fine
