Need help on catching Brown Trout. What rig, bait, and techniques are most effective.?

    Small spinners should work to perfection as well as small "hot steel" rapalas. Browns love small minnows floating down a stream/river naturally. As you know with all trout that they are smart and if they see your shadow or if your making a lot of noise you will spook em’ and your chances of catching one will go down a lot. I recommend bringing 2 rods if you have them and putting a spinner on one and some type of live bait on the other. Change lures ever 45 minutes if you have no luck! best of luck to you and hope you catch a record Brown!

    In vermont I use night crawlers. I fish in the deeper slower moving parts of the river. I fish right on the bottom

    For myself Panther Martin and Blue Fox spinners = Browns = Northern Cal., ie the Trinity River ~ love em’. They’ve been known to partial ta’ Nighcrawlers also. Light spinnin’ rig and 8# test line is what ya’ might consider ;) …
    Note: Know that I’ll get a lot of skeptisim on this statement but, have fished for just about all species of Trout and personally the Brown be the most elusive and scrappiest of them all ~ "Steelies" now, be a whole different story ;) ;) ! Good luck and Fish On" ;) … < ‘ (( ( > <

    All the other answers are good, but on the white river (arkansas) people slay them at night in pools with peeled crawfish tials. On other Ozark river, I tak fishffo ground up with fancake batter added andfish it with a splitshot about12-18 inches aboce a #18 treble hook

    try large white rooster tail spinners, the bigger the better for the big browns. also try x-raps and shad raps by rapala. also have found that brownies seem to really like rattle traps, especially the bigger ones. also try berkley gulp products they work very well especially the nightcrawlers. hope this helps and good luck hope you catch a big one.

    Crayfish are excellent brown trout bait. Drift them slowly and pinch off at least one pincher.

    I catch all my browns in a stream using either leaf worms, or catch the sculpins or other native minnows to that stream. I simply use a #8 hook and I vary my weight depending on current. Sometimes no weight is required.

    Remember that browns stick to cover during the day and they really like undercut banks. Fish those or logjams. At night they come out of their cover to feed so if you can get set up before dark on a good looking spot you’re in business.

    I have noticed that the Browns in Colorado seem to prefer a Brass spinner (no tail needed) I like to flyfish for them also using streamers (double bunny or leech patterns)
