Did you learn to swim in a pond?

Where did you ?

I grew up on a farm and we had a pond down in the pasture where I learned to swim.  How about you?

    In a lake. My mother taught all of us and she didn’t know how to swim

    I never learned to swim. Had lessons at the community pool for 4 years, but can’t swim. My two sisters are the same way…. genetic maybe? lol

    Believe it or not, just this last year. I’m 54. I’m not great at it, but I can swim underwater from one end of the pool to another. I taught myself. It was too risky having a pool and not being able to swim.

    LOL, same here. It wasn’t until I was older and had moved on that I realized all the wash down from the milking house ran into it.

    10th grade at the high school I attended. Had an olympic sized pool, one semester of pool was required to graduate as part of one year of phys ed.

    At the community pool.
    I had a very strict teacher who said get in the water, then 2 seconds later threw you in.
    I took the instructions in an outdoor unheated pool at 8 a.m.
    I’ve hated swimming from that day forward.

    Oh gosh, I hate to admit this. Does anyone know where the Salton Sea is in Calif? Well, years ago, you could actually get in the water without worrying about how sick the water was going to make you or what poison is in it. That is where I learned to swim.

    i was 8, the arkansas river that run behind the dairy we lived on, we were checking trot lines and i leaned over and he put his boot on my butt and said swim or swallow..he was close and it wasnt deep, but i didnt get back in that boat till i swam! i tried to never let him best me, but one thing i never beat him at was a game of pool…

    I learned in Lake Michigan off a Chicago beach when I was about 8 or 9. My mom could not swim but allowed an older neighbor girl to teach me. I couldn’t get the hang of it until I tried holding my breath and swimming under water! Once I learned that it was easy to swim any way I chose. I have loved swimming ever since and now live next to a river. I swim in it every chance I get.

    In the swimming pool of an ocean liner. My family was emigrating from England to Australia – I was 8. I’d never been allowed in the water before, as my mother was fearful of diseases in our local lake. On the ship, there was a beautiful, clean pool with – mercifully – a shallow end. I spend the entire month of our voyage teaching myself to swim, gradually moving further out from shallow to deep water. I’m still not a good swimmer 50 years later, but that month on board the "Himalaya" stood me in good stead over the years !

    I’m almost the same as Noonecanne. Only it was 3 years. Something always happened so I was never able to finish the classes. I still carry the scars on my left foot and a detached toenail from one of those years.

    I was 8 or 9 and my mother let me ride the bus to the pool at a park in a town 4 miles from us. I did this 3 times a week for free swimming lessons. This was around 1954. Pretty safe back then.
    EDIT: Yes Braveeg I remember the Salton Sea well. We used to go there all the time to fish and water ski. It was great before it was ruined.

    A lake in upstate New york..My Dad Was tough , he was the sort who threw you in and then said okay swim…come on if you don’t your gonna drown…don’t be a sissy…so you did just so you could get over to him to kill him!!!OMG, LOL

    I learned to swim in the pool at Peninsula Park in Portland, OR. That was the summer I was 8. When my mother saw how well I took to swimming, she had me take lessons at the YMCA for several years. God knows it was the only sport I was competent at.

    Concrete irrigation ditch that ran through the property. Anywhere from 6 to 15 feet deep it was like having your own river run right through your yard not close to the house or barn tho. It was empty part of the year of course but know one swam in the winter any way.

    Learned to float in Lake Superior, learned to do a few strokes when I was in high school. Swam just well enough to fulfil the graduation requirement.

    At a very early age I taught myself. When the children of my family starting coming along I made sure they could swim also.

    YMCA. Mom never learned to swim so she made sure all of us learned. Back then, you could buy a membership for the whole family (and it was cheaper doing it that way) so we were at the YMCA about 3 or 4 days a week. As soon as we were tall enough to be allowed to take swimming lessons, we took swimming. Minnows, dolphins, sharks (were there other levels?). Some of us progressed to the swim team and life savings. We also did gymnastics, tap dancing, some other things they offered. I especially loved Friday family swim night ’cause dad made an effort to get home in time to join us.

    I learnt to swim at the Beach. Australians are beach crazy its just a huge part of our culture..

    For my Family in the early days the sea was our whole life. My Dad came from the Philippines via Singapore to Broome Western Australia to be a Pearl Diver. You know the ones with the full suit and big brass helmet!!!!.

    He was sent up to Darwin with some Luggers to establish the Pearling Industry up there. We lived on a cliff right above the area where the Luggers were anchored.

    Mums story on how I learnt to swim was that she saw me crawling down the sand to the seas edge and she just let me go because she knew I would bob up to the surface. Apparently I was swimming before I walked. Well that’s the Family story anyway. LOL I obviously did "bob up" because Im still here.

    We spent so much time in the water we were like fish. Still to this day I feel the most comfortable in water. I like to close my eyes and sink down to the bottom. Soo calming and tranquil in the water, I love it.

    Took Red Cross swimming classes from about age 4-5 at public pool. It was only a couple blocks from home and back then, it was normal for 4-6 year old kids walking alone.

    Cost was free in the morning and a dime in the afternoon for kids. Weekends went way up to 20 cents. Best part was, we walked right past the mom and pop candy store on the way.
