We have 2 ponds and I am thinking of puting fish in them however what happens when the colder weather comes?

Dο thеѕе need tο bе taken out οf thе pond during thе winter incase thе pond freezes?

    Fish are fine in ponds over winter. Your pond should be deep enough as to not freeze. That can vary on where you live and how cold the winter months are.

    Filters and accessories need to be pulled from your ponds when the water temperature, not the air temperature remains at 50 degrees. STOP feeding your fish as well since they will go into a state of hibernation. If you continue to feed the fish will not have time to pass the food thru their system prior to hibernating. this can kill them over the winter as the food starts to rot in their intestines.

    Allow the pond to freeze over. DO NOT bang on the ice or attempt to cut air holes, they don’t need them since their breathing and bodies are in a very slow state. Cold water contains much more dissolved oxygen so no worries.

    In the spring, once the water temps stay at 50 or better replace the filter/pump accessories etc. you may want to also remove any leaf debris that had blown in in the fall. this will keep the nitrates down.

    you can start feeding.

    Float a couple of tennis balls, if it freezes over take them out and Hey Presto, breathing holes.
    Never just break the ice.

    Goldfish and Koi will hibernate in the pond for the winter. You must have it at the least 3′ deep. Deeper is better.

    To who ever gave me 2 thumbs down I’m guessing you don’t have a pond and know nothing about them.

    The ponds need to be big enough and deep enough that the fish have room to live underneath the ice when it forms. Never break ice on the pond, the shock can kill the fish…..

    Put in bass, they can survive in a good bit of temperatures.

    float two soft balls on the pond and then you have air holes so they can breathe and put it in every night so theirs always air holes .hope this helps x.
