Can multiple betta fish live in outdoor pond together?

Is it possible to build a simulated environment for betta fish? They seem to live together in rice paddies in the wild, what would it take to recreate a similar pond environment? Any suggestions on building the pond here in Phoenix Arizona? What is a good ratio of females to male betta fish.

    If you wanted to do this you would have to make sure you had 50 gallons per fish. That is a lot of water but bettas living together are very territorial and need a lot of space. Also, the pond would need to be thick with vegetation because bettas need places to hide in case they get into an altercation with another betta. They are very territorial fish. Water temperatures must never drop below 68 and preferably should be kept around 75 to 78. Also, make sure you have more females than males at all times. Otherwise the females will be in high demand and will become harassed by all the males looking to mate with them. I would say 3 females for every male. It’s a very interesting idea but I think you’ll find it to be a lot harder to pull off then you might have originally thought.

    That would have to be a pretty large pond. I’m not sure it is possible to do this. You could have a all female pond though. Males and females will fight too, and if a male makes a bubble nest they become very protective. They are also very territorial fish.

    male betta will fight to death if they meet but females dont.so maybe a male and a few female or just female or one male or none..I would recommend small goldfishes thn many betta.

    Sure, as long as they never see each other, once they do then the fight is to the death in most cases. A lot of times the loser is wounded and can’t recover from it. As far as the females are concerned it really doesn’t matter as long as she can escape. Also do you plan on moving the fish indoors during the cold months? Or will your pond be heated because bettas won’t tolerate low temp water for too long. But, I will say this the idea is interesting and I am almost tempted to suggest doing it but I don’t want you to waste your money if it doesn’t work out. Good Luck!!!!!!!

    depends on the size of the pond… if it is big then that is better but you are still taking a risk of some dead fish. Bettas are really territorial as you probably know so maybe getting females would be better. They don’t fight each other. Even if you put a male in with a bunch of females it could be disaster because after bettas mate the males have been known to kill the females and eat the eggs.

    I have seen some decorative ponds in the Phoenix area when visiting my daughter who has lived there for years. Because Phoenix ponds can be warmer than Betta splendens likes, I’d suggest one of the other Betta species. I have three pairs of Betta cocchina (wine red betta)in one 75 gallon tank, along with glowlight danios.

    Unless you can make a pond as big as a rice paddy. Then go for B. splendens if you want.
