How much can I expect my pond's water level to drop?

I hаνе a іn mу backyard. Hοw much water dο уου expect I loose tο ? I lost аbουt аn inch іn thе last few days. Thаt sounds lіkе a tο mе. Whаt wουld уου expect?

    I found a very professional discussion that answers the pond evaporation question along with showing you how to learn if your pond is leaking. They said to figure 1/4th inch a day during the warm days of summer if you are in a temperate zone. If you are in the midwest or eastern US, figure less than 1/4th inch when the weather is humid. In desert zones, figure 1/2 inch a day during very dry weather. This should give you a good bracket depending on your location. They also gave a method to accurately compare evaporation to any other source of water loss such as seeping, splashing from waterfalls or something called evapotranspiration in plants.     If you have a fountain of any kind, the water is blowing out. If you have a waterfall, the water is probably dripping off the back. Try this: Turn the pump off and fill the pond up. Watch it for a day. If it loses water, you have a leak. But chances are you do not. The water is either falling or blowing out.
    Evaporation is rarely a problem.

    It depends on your subsoil. My pond is on a clay foundation. It drops one inch per day during the dry summer days. My neighbor does not lose any water. His pond is supplied by a natural spring, lucky rascal. In the spring my pond evaporates and seeps at a loss of about 1/4 inch per day. On a windy day it loses about 1/2 inch. I provide water with a four inch deep well and find myself lucky when I lose only two inches per week. I bring the level up by pumping four to eight hours a week. If your soil is sandy, that problem will persist. Small ponds do well with plastic liners, although somewhat expensive, consider what is best, pumping expenses or liners.

    It depends on where you are located. I live in Virginia and depending on the week our -pool- can drop anywhere from 1 to 3 inches in a given week depending on the temperature. An inch should be considered normal. Once it gets to be in the heat of summer you may notice that it will drop enough that you will need to add water to the pond every week if it hasn’t rained in a while. I’d say the loss due to evaporation can be anywhere from 1" – 5" every week. Anymore than that and you may have a leak.
