    It varies by manufacturer, but generally you will need to follow the following steps:

    1. Turn on meter, allow it to perform its self-test
    2. Check calibration. If calibration is recent (within past week) you can go ahead and use the probe. If not, you will need to calibrate using a freshly prepared standard solution or you can calibrate in air with a barometer.
    3. Place probe in water to be measured. Allow it to sit and equilibrate for 30 seconds-1 minute before recording reading.
    4. After reading, rinse probe with deionized water and place back in storage solution.
    5. Turn probe off.

    Every meter is different, especially for calibration, so you should really get the specific manual for the meter and read it.
