Is it true the bigger the pond filter the better?

Big pond filter small pond

I haven’t had my pond very long and I am new to taking care of one. I am thinking about turning a dustbin next to my small pond into a .  The pond is about three hundred gallons and has a very small filter.  The bin is about three feet high and I am thinking it would have bio balls on the bottom covered in foam then more bio balls topped off with pond plants.  My estimate is it would cost £35.  Is there any problem having such a big filter for a small pond or is it a waste of time.  Is bigger better?

    yes the bigger the better remember say your pond is 50 gallons, and you buy a box filter, that its self would hold 20 gallons, adding up to more 70 gallons over all, plus the filter will be able to cope better than a small filter, you will have the same amount of bactria as in a small filter, as the numbers work on how much food like ammonia available to them, but as your fish grow, plus when other animals move in like snails, and other small pond life, your filter bacteria have move room in a larger filter to grow in numbers in the larger filter.
    I know you pond may be more than 50 gallons, but its just an example of how the filter add more gallons to the over all water load.

    Edit yes making one is fine, a water butt holds lots of water, still adding to the over all gallons of the pond.

    Filter aren’t that expensive. And yes the bigger the better. I have a pond with maybe 10 goldfish and it is completely clean no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Heavy planting will help yuor pond so get a lot of plants in there and they will eventually turn the bottom into a huge biological filter. Basically we don’t need to filter our pond anymore. The water is crystal clear and i can’t explain how established it is.

    Goodluck but the time and effort gone into making a filter you may as well buy one.

    Yup bigger the better.
    And whoever said ‘they’re not expensive’, it’s a matter of opinion. :)
    Size matters! This will be an amazing filter, think of all the good bacteria in there.
    I hope it all goes well, and your Pond looks amazing I’m sure. (Your the creative type!)

    A bigger filter is never a bad idea for a pond. On the other hand, a pump that was too big would be. Just make sure the pump you are using for this filter is properly rated. Over the years I have found that most people make their own filters for their pond, as large filters are more expensive and once you actually examine one, you find all that’s in there is some media and filter floss. Make your own filter, it would be a great weekend project.
