How to build a pond of five to ten acres?

What will it cost to build a five to ten acre pond? I am thinking it should be a maximum ten feet deep.

    is this a real question?

    that is 1,500-3,000 triaxle loads of dirt to remove.

    I don’t know about cost for moving all that dirt, but you will want some sort of water circulation or you’re just going to have a huge mosquito nest. So you’ll need a pump and a well and probably a large storage tank. Also you’ll want some sort of barrier at the water edge(rip rap or bring in loads of sand every year), otherwise it will erode the banks eventually making your pond juts a big low spot.

    mmmm,for the sake of argument a thought comes to mind.Ya know water rights become a very sticky issue and regulated by law.

    you’ll need a spring-fed creek, a dam and lots of clearances from the folks who control the watershed ….. and your neighbors who might also use the creek….you don’t just ‘build’ a pond that size…..

    Go to http://www.pondboss.com/forums/ It is the Pond Boss Forum. It is a web forum based solely on building, maintaining, stocking and fishing private ponds. The guys on there are very knowledgeable and can help you out. The forum is based off the Pond Boss magazine, a bimonthly publication of the same purpose. It is owned by Bob Lusk a very accomplished fisheries biologist and Mike Otto a very accomplished engineer specializing in pond construction.

    To quick answer your question, the cost to build a pond that is 5-10 acres with a maximum depth of 10 feet varies widely. 5-10 acres is a huge difference. Second, it depends on what region of the country the pond is being built. What soils prevail in that area, is it clay, sand, rock etc… It also depends on what kind of pond is being built. There a different kinds of ponds; embankment ponds, excavated ponds and levee ponds. Each has a different cost to build. You could be looking at anywhere from $3,000 an acre up to $20,000 plus per acre. That does not include the land purchase price for a place to build the pond!
