Does koi pond size affect how large the koi grow?

Koi just keep getting bigger

Our new house came with a , that’s what we were told anyway.  When we moved in they were five small fish but they keep growing and don’t seem to stop.  The smallest is now about nine inches and it seems to be staying small but the largest has grown to around fourteen inches.  Does the size of the pond affect the size?  Or, will the Koi just keep growing and get to big for the pond?  The koi pond is not that large.

    First your not sure they are Koi. The smaller one may be a goldfish.

    Unfortunately Koi will keep growing and in a small pond they will become obvious targets for predators such as Herons and cats. They will also have problems in a hard winter as big fish need to get down deep to survive the cold.

    Koi can comfortably reach 2 feet.

    Try an advert in your local paper, you can expect £20 per fish for Koi the size of yours. If the smaller fish is either a Goldfish or Orf it is worthless.

    Gaining a pond and wanting a pond feature are two separate issues. If it is so small, consider rehoming the fish and letting it become a nature pond. Frogs and newts can look after themselves and they are just as enjoyable if this isn’t going to be your hobby.

    they will grow for years and years. people who think that buying fish and that they will only grow to the size of the pond/aquarium is completely untrue and the suffers due of it

    The koi should grow to really big – a female koi can be over a metre long when fully mature. They need a huge pond – otherwise they start to become stunted where the body can’t grow but the internal organs still can, which is very painful for them and ultimately fatal. If you can’t get a bigger pond, see if you can take them to your local fish shop and they can give them a better home.

    No they only grow to the size of the pond.
